Cigarettes, cigars, chewing tobacco, snuff, and pipe tobacco contain the addictive drug nicotine. In this section you will find information about tobacco, quitting, and how to work with people in our community who are concerned about tobacco related issues

So What's the Big Deal?

  • Each year in Nebraska 2,400 people die from tobacco related illnesses
  • Each year in Nebraska 3240-400 people dies from secondhand smoke related illnesses
  • Each year in the United States, 2,500 youth (18 & under) become daily smokers
  • $537 million is the annual cost in Nebraska directly caused by smoking

Teens who smoke are three times more likely to use alcohol, eight times more likely to use marijuana, and 22 times more likely to use cocaine. Smoking is also associated with other risk behaviors such as fighting and engaging in unprotected sex.

Now that we have your attention, what can be done? GET INVOLVED! In many communities people are pulling together to help prevent youth from using tobacco, educate on the dangers of secondhand smoke, help people quit, and change laws to protect the health of everyone.

Tobacco Free Lancaster County Coalition

Tobacco Free Lancaster County protects the public by eliminating exposure to secondhand smoke, preventing youth from starting to use tobacco, providing education to all populations, and encouraging people to quit

Goals of Tobacco Free Lancaster County

  • Serve as a broad-based community tobacco prevention coalition
  • Educate the community with up-to-date tobacco prevention information
  • Advocate for policies that reduce tobacco use and protect the public from secondhand smoke
  • Engage a variety of agencies, businesses, and individuals in tobacco prevention activities
  • Take action on tobacco-related issues in Lincoln-Lancaster County

Counting the Cost Video

"Counting the Cost" is a locally produced educational video address tobacco use and secondhand smoke. The video combines statistics, personal interviews, a viewing of an actual lung surgery, tobacco advertising and marketing tactics, and frank discussions with youth and adults about the hazards of tobacco use.
